Origin of jeep

4X4s started with jeeps during World war 2 around the 1940s. A small company by name Bantam took up a tender for the U.S army's requirement for a lightweight vehicle capable of seating 6 fully loaded soldiers, take on any terrain for long distances and extremely durable. Amazingly, the company was out with a working prototype in just 49days! The American army tested it and found that the company was not big enough to cater to their needs and gave licences to Willys Overland and Ford to manufacture jeeps for the military. The requirement was so big that America produced almost 1 jeep every 2 minutes!

After the war during 1945, civilian models of jeeps started to come out and that is how the jeep or SUV or 4X4 had its fantastic birth.

Mahindra and Mahindra, a company synonymous to JEEP in India acquired licence for assembly of jeeps from Willys Overland. And from then on, Mahindra has developed jeeps in India suitable for Indian conditions and requirements like two wheel drive jeeps as utility vehicles.
Then came along Nissan Patrol a.k.a JONGA, Maruti Suzuki Gypsy, Force Gurkha, Land rovers and a whole new generation of 4X4s in India better known as SUVs.
